This book includes some very helpful grids for helping spouses ( or friends – or enemies!) to understand each other. It would have rated higher with me if it had emphasized more the attitude of a servant spirit to which God calls His people, and the distinctive commands to the wife and the husband. The Excellent Wife: A Biblical Perspective

  2. Drs. Les & Leslie Parrott are dynamic seminar leaders and excellent marriage counselors, who have helped thousands to strengthen their relationships. This audio book proves to contain very helpful advice and understanding about the dynamics of pre-marital and marital communication. However, the Peter-principal certainly applies to their valiant effort of narrating the book themselves. Early on, the sing-songy vocal patterns employed become annoying, leaving the listener with an endurance challeng. It would be wise for the authors to do what they do best and to have hired professional narrators to handle the interpretive readings. The content is valuable and worth the price of admission, however a hardback copy would prove to be far less hypnotic.

  3. Dr. Les and Dr. Leslie Parrott claim this book will revolutionize your relationship. I’ve read a lot of relationship books and this one only gave me a few new ideas. While most books focus on male and female differences this book focuses mostly on talk styles. I discovered that my husband is an aggressive problem solver while I’m a passive problem solver.

There were the usual chapters on how to listen and how to show empathy. There is a chapter on when “not” to talk and when to give your partner space. It is all very logical and the advice is good, it just didn’t seem revolutionary to me.

Since a lot of this books usefulness depends on taking tests online it will be a pity if you receive a book without a personal passcode. The book I found has no passcode on the back cover so I was unable to take the “online” test for free. From what I could tell you still have to pay for a second test if your partner wants to take it too. So it will cost you about $30 to take one test for two people because it is about $15 a test when they run a special.

Another thing I found slightly irritating is that this book is written with two other workbooks in mind. At regular intervals, the authors talk about “workbook exercises” which you can’t do unless you have the two Love Talk workbooks.

So if you are looking for a very basic book on communication styles then this might be helpful. If you are looking for additional books on relationships I can recommend:

I got this book because it was required for a class taught by Les & Leslie Parrott at Seattle Pacific University. The class and book are awesome! I’m not married, but I still learned a lot of practical tips for communicating with my future wife (hopefully) and even my friends and family!

They truly taught me a lot about the importance of communication & understanding each other…then you’ll reach Love Talk!

  5. I was disappointed with the book primarily because it depends on you taking a test online (which costs for you and your spouse to both take it) and references are made over and over to the workbook (separate books for husband and wife). Consequently this book seemed more about selling stuff than it did helping communication in the home. Don’t spend the money on the book unless you are willing to also buy the workbooks and pay for the test. It would have seemed more “honest” to raise the price of the book a little and put the worksheets right in the book. Frankly, the information in the book isn’t anything better than something much more reasonable from Norman Wright, Gary Smalley or Gary Chapman.
