Laurie is a woman who falls prisoner to a Middle Eastern man named Sahir. Not only does he subject Laurie to extreme physical and mental abuse, but he also manipulates the loopholes in the justice system to get away with his evil schemes. The book wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t the greatest either.
One thing I hate about this book is contradictions. While there were not allot, there was enough to annoy me.
For starters she said that her husband went against his religion because he would have wine sometimes. Then later she says that her husband was one of those people who one beer leads to six.
Another that bothered me was that when she told how she knew her lawyer there were three or four stories on that. One was he was a family friend whom they had known for years, another was that he was recomended by her ex-husband, and the other I remember was that they were lucky to find him.
Over all the story was pretty good. I just wish that she would have given more detail as to how she fell in love with the man that abused her, so that I could relate to why she stayed at the begining of the abuse.
This woman really did go through one hellish marriage and divorce. I can understand why she didn’t leave her husband because she was afraid that he would take the kids back to his country and she would never see them again. Before she had her children though, I can’t understand why she stayed around. I know he threatened to kill her and her family, but that should not have been enough to make her stay with all the support she had.

Inspiring, a tribute to the spirit of one woman’s struggle for herself and her children to find a life after years of what seems almost unbelievable acts of abuse. Even when at times the system failed her, she continued to struggle to find herself and save her children.
Simply written, yet offers such insight as to how easily a bright young woman can fall victim to such horror, a textbook for all women.

This book is a real life account of a middle class mother who became trapped and beaten down by her abusive husband. Her account of how she hid her pain and suffering from her family for the safety of her children and family is straight from the heart. At times she wished she were taken from the world due to the physical and mental abuse she endured. In the end she found the strength to battle the abuser and a system that was stacked against her. She stood up for herself , her children and her family and she proved that the truth and love wins in the end.
This book is an easy read and will help anyone realize that many of those we love can easily become victims. Perhaps this book can give strength and perspective to others that have experienced similar difficulites.

This book was recommended to me by a friend, and I found it to be an honest, moving and enlightening record of the author’s and her family’s difficult journey from despair to empowerment and hope. Lisa Mayer speaks to every woman who has been vulnerable to a destructive relationship or who has known someone in one. Her story is gripping and disturbing, though ultimately, she and her children each is able to call on their inner strengths to survive and overcome their abuse. This book also provides an important accounting of the necessary but very flawed child protective services system in this country. The author’s chance to set the record straight on her experiences no doubt is part of the healing for this amazing family. The power of this book stays with me long after it’s been read. Congratulations on this fine important work.
