This might be okay if you really wanted to learn Portuguese, but it’s not good for tourists. For either use, I don’t think the audio is good. It moves too fast.

  2. Since Brazilian Portugese is one of the two major spoken languages in the southern hemisphere the purchase of the text was a no brainer for me. Having studied Spanish in high school and thru self-study with the aid of such super products as the Penton Overseas products I decided to look into learning some Brazilian. Portugese. This language is one of the Romance languages along with Spanish, French, Italian, and Romanian and many of the words are very similar to either Spanish or Italian. The study of Brazilian Portugese will stand you in good stead if your travel for fun or work in the southern hemisphere. This text even includes a cd to allow you to listen to the language. Boa sorte. CM

This book consists mainly of grammar theory and lists of examples to illustrate the grammar points. The audio is also on grammar. Here and there you will come across the occasional list of vocabulary like ‘countries and nationalities’ or ‘professions and occupations’. Then you go back to grammar. There is no life to it! Positively boring!

I needed to learn Portuguese over the summer so I bought this program. It is VERY thourough and it has really helped me. The CD also helps with pronunciation throughout the lessons.

Good book. You will learn the basics in portuguese. That being said, it’s a very slow method: you will have to reach page 58 to learn “to be” (present tense) in portuguese. Moreover, each lesson begin with a very basic grammar explanation (what is a noun?, what is an article?). I find it a bit condescending (the author could have assumed that her readers went to elementary school).

The CD is very helpful. I would not buy the book without it.
